What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose Veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. Mostly they occur in the legs and ankles. They usually appear in blue, red or flesh color. They often appear as cords and can be bulged. They can be swollen and raised above the surface of your skin. Hence they can be easily visible. Hemorrhoids, a type of varicose vein, can appear during pregnancy around the anus or in the vagina.
You might be at more risk of getting varicose veins if you have a family history, age, obesity etc. Varicose veins can be characterized by many symptoms. Some of the symptoms may include dry, itchy skin. Discoloration of the skin is also one of the symptoms.
What are the Causes of Varicose Veins?
Veins are blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart. There are two main types ofveins. One is the superficial veins that are near the surface of the skin and the second one is the deep veins that are located in the muscle tissue. Varicose veins are caused by increased blood pressure inside the superficial veins.
The veins in the legs take blood up to the heart. The blood is moved up to the heart through one-way valves in the veins. When your muscles in legs contract and squeeze the deep veins, the valves inside the veins open. So, in contrast when your leg muscles relax, the valves close, preventing blood from flowing backwards.
When the one-way valves fail to function normally then blood gets collected in the vein causing the veins to enlarge. Lack of physical activity, sitting and standing for long time can cause the blood to pool in the leg veins, hence increasing the pressure in the veins. In people who are more susceptible to varicose veins, the veins can stretch as a result of increased pressure. This stretching of the veins may weaken the walls of the veins and damage the valves. This results in thick varicose veins.
Age and Pregnancy are also listed as major causes of varicose veins.
With age, your veins can lose elasticity causing them to stretch. The valves that are responsible to move blood from legs up to the heart may become weak. So they might allow the blood to flow in a backward direction. This backward flow pools blood in the veins that leads to varicose veins. The varicose veins appear blue in color because they contain deoxygenated blood, which is in process of being re-circulated through the lungs.
Generally, pregnant woman develop varicose veins in the first trimester. Pregnancy causes increase in hormone levels and blood volume which causes the veins to enlarge. In addition, the enlarged uterus puts pressure on the veins.
Varicose veins can also be caused due to the following reasons:
- Congenital abnormalities of the veins
- Inflammation of the veins
- Blood clots
